About Marty

Marty

BIO
I discovered photography in high school and built my own darkroom. I was ultimately drawn to a career in medicine and became a Pediatrician. I practiced Pediatrics for over 35 years, caring for infants and children. I maintained my interest in photography while working, but it wasn’t until I retired that I returned to studying, practicing and experimenting with photography.

ARTIST STATEMENT
It’s my nature to see detail, sometimes before I see the wider scene. I love capturing what I see, interpreting it and sharing it. Photography as an art form provides tools for me to be creative. With the advent of digital photography, I have been able to expand my creativity and explore new areas of expressing my vision, my art. There is no single theme to my work as my interests are varied. I focus on what and how people do things in their lives. This can be seen in my “Hands” series and the “Signs from the March” series of images. I like to focus on detail, as in my “Rusty Trucks” series. But then I also may move from detail to a broader view in landscape and travel images.

I believe that defining a photograph as “fine art” is mostly subjective and it may be different for all of us. To that end, the question I ask myself while working with a photograph is “Do I love the image I’ve created?” If I do, it becomes part of my fine art. Sharing my art with others and continuing to learn is what’s the most fun for me.
